Health Screenings

The health and well-being of our students is a priority. In accordance with Indiana Department of Education requirements, health screenings are conducted throughout the school year to help identify potential vision and hearing concerns that may affect a student's learning and overall success in school. These screenings are not diagnostic examinations but serve as an important tool for early identification and referral when additional evaluation may be needed.

Vision Screenings

Indiana schools are required to conduct vision screenings for students in:

  • Kindergarten or Grade 1
  • Grade 3
  • Grade 5
  • Grade 8

Vision screenings measure both near and distance visual acuity. Students who are suspected of having a vision concern may also be screened regardless of grade level.

Additionally, students in Kindergarten or Grade 1 receive a Modified Clinical Technique (MCT) vision screening performed by a licensed eye care professional when available.

If a student does not pass a vision screening, parents/guardians will be notified and encouraged to seek follow-up care from an eye care provider.

Hearing Screenings

Indiana schools are required to conduct hearing screenings for students in:

  • Grade 1
  • Grade 4
  • Grade 7
  • Grade 10

Students who are new to the district or are suspected of having a hearing concern may also be screened.

If a student does not pass a hearing screening, parents/guardians will be notified and encouraged to obtain a professional hearing evaluation.

Parent Notification

Parents/guardians will receive written notification if a screening indicates a possible concern. A referral does not necessarily mean a student has a vision or hearing problem; it simply indicates that further evaluation by a healthcare professional is recommended.
