There have been many questions and rumors over the summer
about classes, programs and instruction. I want to address those concerns and
explain what has been done, and why decisions were made. Given the short time
frame and the reduction of staff, we were challenged to create a schedule to
accommodate the needs of our students while continuing our goal to ensure the
quality of education at Edison. Hard decisions and sacrifices were made to
maximize and maintain the integrity of instruction for all students.
There are several factors that we needed to focus on in
order to accomplish our goal. First, our effort was to maintain AP, Dual credit
and Honors classes. Second, we focused on class size and how best to maintain a
reasonable number of students in individual classes to preserve instruction.
Third, despite reduced staff, we had to ensure that we had qualified teachers
providing appropriate instruction to students, therefore many teachers now
instruct for multiple subjects.
Another challenge we have found is because of the limited
number of teachers, there were sacrifices needed in programs and content areas
including larger class sizes and study halls.
Also, classes for junior high students, such as health, technology, home
economics, are now included during rotation/homeroom period instead of a
stand-alone class, this in turn has caused us to schedule many, if not all,
junior high students into more than one study hall which has impacted the size
of the study halls.
Despite our challenges, we have been able to maintain our
AP, Dual Credit and Honors classes at the high school level to accommodate
those students who are on a honors diploma track. We also have been able to
maintain honors math classes at the junior high level. And although some electives are no longer
available, we were able to maintain the elective classes at the high school
level to ensure to meet all graduation requirements.
Rest assured that despite the challenges presented before
us, my staff is working hard to make sure that our students continue to receive
a quality education at Edison. If you
ever have questions or concerns, please contact me because working together we
can provide a successful educational experience this year for your child.
