“No other skill taught in school and learned by children is more important than reading. It is the gateway to all other knowledge.”

My name is Kelli Kalin. I am the reading specialist at Hamilton Elementary.  I look forward to a wonderful school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.

    Teaching

I graduated from IU in 2001 with a degree in Elementary Education. This is my first year as a Reading Specialist and my first year at Lake Station. I have taught in Lake Central, East Chicago, Portage, and Sylvan Learning Center. Reading is very special to me. Written language is a man made construct that does not come naturally. About 20% of the population struggles with reading. I find great joy in helping these students break the code and become true readers

    Personal

I live in Portage. I have been in Portage since 1982, but I actually started school in Lake Station at Bailey. I have been married to my husband, West, since 2000. We have one son, Joey, who is a freshman in college. We have a dog, a snake, and a gecko. We like to travel, go fishing, and hang out on our boat.
